Abstract
Purpose : To report the outcome of vitreous surgery for proliferative diabetic retinopathy in the past 2 years. Cases and Method : This retrospective study was made on 76 eyes of 70 cases who received 20-gauge vitrectomy in 2007 and 2008. All had non-insulin dependent diabetic retinopathy. The series comprised 44 male and 32 female eyes. The age ranged from 35 to 78 years, average 59 years. Cases were followed up for 6 to 30 months, average 11 months. Results : Visual acuity improved in 55 eyes (72%), remained unchanged in 19 eyes (25%), and deteriorated in 2 eyes (3%). Averaged visual acuity showed significant improvement (p=0.0005). Repeat vitreous surgery was performed in 3 eyes (4%). Anatomical improvement was obtained in 98.7% of eyes. Visual outcome was better in younger patients (p= 0.01). Conclusion : Visual acuity improved or was maintained in 97% of eyes after 20 G vitreous surgery for proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
