    Abstract

This study aims, through a comprehensive survey, to identify all the Catholic churches in Hong Kong, which were established between 1945 and 1955. It was revealed that “chapels in refugee settlements” emerged in the early 1950s due to the influx of refugees from China whereas “stand-alone churches” and “mission stations,” which occupied the majority of churches until the early 20th century, decreased. Another type of church emerged was “church and school complex,” which was a school building that had a permanent parish church space inside. Such type of church was devised to cater for a rapid increase of young population.
