Abstract

A 70-year-old man who had been diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis 3 years prior was admitted to our hospital because of pyrexia, cough, hypoxemia, dyspnea on exertion, and emerging chest infiltrates unresponsive to antibacterial chemotherapies. Examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid revealed an increase in the total number of cells, including elevated eosinophil levels. The patient was successfully treated with oral administration of prednisolone. Based on these findings, this is a rare case of eosinophilic pneumonia of unknown etiology that coin-cidentally developed in a patient with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
