Abstract

A 52-year old man, with a Brinkman Index of 900, presented with a dry cough and an interstitial pattern on chest CT images. He was diagnosed with desquamative interstitial pneumonia (DIP) by video-assisted thoracoscopic lung biopsy. He stopped smoking, and was observed without any treatment for 2 years. When dry cough, exertional dyspnea, and interstitial pneumonia on chest images gradually deteriorated, he was admitted to our hospital. He was diagnosed with exacerbation of DIP, and was treated with steroids. After 3 weeks, chest images, pulmonary function tests, and arterial blood gas analysis were significantly improved. He has shown a good clinical course with the low-dose steroid treatment.
