Abstract
This study proposes to use formative images as indicators for design and evaluation of manhole covers by considering the features and problems of their design process, to confirm their validity, and to identify the relation between the formative images and the design components. Seven image words that express the formative images of the composition of the ground manhole covers were abstracted from a questionnaire survey conducted among five in-house designers. Images of eight samples were evaluated after replacing the design motifs with geometric shapes by five in-house designers and six contract designers, who actually design the manhole covers, and then the validity of these words was verified based on the result of evaluation. The role of formative images as common indicators was confirmed as there was no difference between the results of evaluations by the in-house designers and the contract designers. The relation between formative images and design components was identified by the theory of quantification (I), and the indicators for design proposals of manhole covers were obtained.
